Automated Arrester Test System

Natural phenomena as lightning and power irregularities delivered from power utilities are responsible for power failures and possible damage to sensitive electronic equipment. Surge arresters should withstand an instant high surge energy and multiple lightning and power surge events. Therefore, arrester - mov testing is critical.

This system has been achieved for TE Connectivity; a manufacturer in Fuquay-Varina, NC, USA in 2011. The design is not standard but customized to meet different clients' requirements. Please check Arrester Impulse Test System  for full details; a similar project achieved in Drama, Greece.

OVERVIEW

Automated Arrester Test System; is an automated system deployed to test surge arresters. For a closer view, this automated system is meant to perform:

- Impulse test on arresters (MOV) at production line level including high current testing to generate

  a 8/20µs pulse.

- Low current DC test at production line level.

Both tests are applied at production level. For impulse, output voltage and current measurements are interpreted to insure that the tested MOV will withstand the proposed surge energy without damage.

Impulse test is performed at 8/20µs capacitor bank. The maximum voltage and current detected between the tested MOV’s terminals should draw the 8/20µs waveform. Otherwise, the MOV proves improper operation and expected defects. On the other hand, the purpose of the DC test is to test the reference voltage at operating conditions. The measured voltage across the tested MOV should be close enough to the reference voltage.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE

The Automated Arrestor Test software package allows you to conduct fully automated test. An attractive, user-friendly interface that combines many options.

- Performing hardware diagnostics to insure proper communication with devices.
- Setting configurable parameters for flexible system operation.
- Defining UUT serial numbers as positioned on turn table.
- Performing completely automated tests.
- Showing the turn table and switching board status as tests proceed.
- Performing manual tests or walkthrough tests providing a debug mode.
- Showing real-time graphical and indicator value displays.
- Storing results in Microsoft Access™ database format. Retrieving test history records of one or
  several units.
- Generating test reports, in Microsoft Excel format, including company info, date, UUT data, test
results, graphical representation and much more.

There are several other options such as user configurable fields and password protection with multiple users of different security access levels. ASD’s add-on features allow the utilization of barcode reader to scan UUT barcodes for automated identification without the need off manual entry.
